Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-frequency sound waves to stimulate healing and relieve pain. In physical medicine, it is commonly used to treat a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and neurological disorders.

During treatment, high-frequency sound waves—typically in the range of 1 to 3 MHz—penetrate the skin and underlying tissues. These sound waves are produced by an electric current converted into mechanical energy through the piezoelectric effect of a quartz or ceramic crystal. The device is applied to the skin using a conductive gel, allowing the sound waves to be precisely directed to the targeted area.

Ultrasound treatments are particularly effective in producing both analgesic and regenerative effects. They act on tissues through mechanical means (often referred to as “internal tissue massage”), as well as thermal, biological, and chemical effects. Ultrasound therapy helps relax muscles and increases the elasticity of collagen-rich tissues such as scars, aponeuroses, tendons, ligaments, and joint capsules. It also promotes wound healing and reduces inflammation.

It is an essential part of sports physical therapy, as it promotes tissue regeneration after overuse and injuries, and provides relief in cases of muscle contractures and fibrosis.

How Does Ultrasound Therapy Help Patients?

Who Should Avoid Ultrasound Therapy?

Contraindications for ultrasound therapy include, among others, cancer, pregnancy, metal implants, and coagulation disorders. Ultrasound therapy should not be applied in cases of acute and fresh inflammation, or in any condition where inducing hyperemia would be unnecessary or harmful.
